Make sure your passport is up to date.  A safe, pleasant trip begins well before you wave goodbye to your neighbours.  It starts with your preparations.  Is everyone relaxed and refreshed?  A tense, tired driver is more prone to error in judgment and performance.
Packing only what is needed for the trip alleviates clutter in the car and contributes greatly to passenger comfort and harmony.  A checklist will help you dicide what to take and remember to take it.  Knowing your car is in tiptop shape and that your home is left in such a way that it does not advertise your absence frees you for an enjojyable, worry-free vacation.
Good driving is the result of sound techniques executed with courtesy and common sense.  Observe posted speed limits, and pay strict attention to road signs and traffic lights.
"Any trail in Acadia National Park beats all other coastal trails in New England," says Mike Fox.  When you arrive in Acadia National Park, get maps and guide books, head to the West Ledge Trail.  This short and steep out-and-back winds up 1,071-foot Bernard Mountain for 3.2 miles, starting at Western Mountain Road.  You will traverse exposed ledges overlooking the Gulf of Maine, Seal Cove Pond, and the seaside towns of Bernard and Bass Harbour.  Go left on the South Face Trail at 1.1 miles, and in another half-mile reach the summit.  Follow the overlook sign to a log bench and your own ocean-view property.

Driving from Somerville, take ME 102 7.6 miles south to Seal Cove Road.  Turn left and go .5 mile to W. Mountain Road. Turn left and go 1.3 miles to the trailhead, making a left, then a right at the two forks on the way.  The Bernard Mountain is better than Cadillac Mountain of the two trails in Acadia National Park.
You may want to get maps and the Appalachian Trail Guide to Main.
